• Be careful of the catapult effect on uneven ground.

  • You do not need to touch the power cables to be electrocuted – electricity can jump!

  • Do you operate MEWPs near roads? Always work safely and set up an exclusion zone to protect the boom from entering a live road.

  • Are your MEWP tyres safe to use? Always check the condition of your tyres and wheels as part of your pre-use inspection.

  • Do you have a rescue plan? Always have a rescue plan in place for mast climbing work platforms (MCWPs) and construction hoists.

  • Don’t overload the hoist. Stay within the hoist rated capacity and observe the limits of the machine.

  • Don't fall for it! Position your MEWP correctly and always stay inside the platform guardrails with both feet on the platform floor.

  • Are you servicing the MEWP safely when on-site? Servicing MEWPs on-site can create higher risks than workshop servicing.

  • Use a Spotter! If visibility is restricted, use a spotter to guide you safely into position.

    Use a Spotter
  • Be safe in the workshop. Ensure all work on MEWPs is carried out safely.

  • Keep all occupants safe. Be aware of all platform occupants when moving the MEWP.

  • Is the Nominated Ground Rescue Person familiarised? Not all MEWPs are the same. Make sure you understand, learn and practice the ground controls and emergency lowering procedure.

  • Do not use a damaged harness, lanyard or connector. Always conduct a pre-use check before using your personal fall protection equipment (PFPE).

  • Be street smart! Manage vehicle and pedestrian traffic, create a safe working zone.

  • Use Spreader Pads! Always check ground loading and use the IPAF spreader pad calculator.

  • Working at height is a high-risk activity, take care of your people and be responsible for safety with IPAF's help. IPAF has a range of Andy Access posters, in multiple languages, to help your workforce, covering important mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) and mast climbing work platform (MCWP) safety topics. All to help keep operators safe and prevent accidents.

  • Prevent unauthorised use. After use, always leave the MEWP in a safe and secure place and remove the key.

  • Keep clear of cables. You do not need to touch the power cables to be electrocuted – electricity can jump!

  • Overhead obstructions. Always be aware of your surroundings and identify crush hazards when moving the platform.

  • Register pre-owned MEWPs. Make sure you register with the MEWP manufacturer to get safety alerts and product updates.

  • Unsafe ground? Always check ground conditions – plan your route.

  • Caution when loading and unloading. Always load and unload MEWPs safely.
