  • Don’t get hit at height! Never elevate the platform if there is a risk of being hit by other equipment.

  • Retract extension decks before lowering. Check all four corners are clear of obstructions before you lower the platform.

  • Never elevate the platform occupants from the ground controls. There is an increased risk of crushing/entrapment if you elevate people from the ground control position.

  • Don’t forget to report all accidents and near misses involving powered access into the IPAF Accident Reporting Portal or report anonymously through IPAF’s ePAL app.

  • Conduct a pre-use inspection and make sure the MEWP is safe to use before starting work.

  • Before setting up a MEWP on a road have in place a traffic management plan and an exclusion zone.

  • Don’t operate a MEWP when there is a risk of lightning. Seek proper shelter and wait until the storm passes.

  • Don’t Overload the Platform. Overloaded platforms can become unstable, always understand the machine limits before operating. Distribute the load evenly to prevent tip overs.

  • Position your MEWP correctly and always stay inside the platform guardrails with both feet on the platform floor

  • Understand the ground conditions before operating

  • Always be aware and avoid crush hazards when moving the platform.

  • Prevent objects falling from the platform. Be aware that unsecured tools and materials can fall from platforms.

  • Stay safe when working around antennas. You are at risk from non-ionising radiation (RF) from transmitting antennas. Always make sure they are isolated and you have a permit to work.

  • Be careful of the catapult effect on uneven ground.

  • You do not need to touch the power cables to be electrocuted – electricity can jump!

  • Do you operate MEWPs near roads? Always work safely and set up an exclusion zone to protect the boom from entering a live road.

  • Are your MEWP tyres safe to use? Always check the condition of your tyres and wheels as part of your pre-use inspection.

  • Do you have a rescue plan? Always have a rescue plan in place for mast climbing work platforms (MCWPs) and construction hoists.
