  • IPAF held a safety and technology-focused event in Changsha, China, in May, drawing key players from China’s mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) industry. This regional event, sponsored by Hunan Sinoboom Intelligent Equipment and Haulotte China, emphasised the importance of safe operations and innovation in MEWP usage.

  • IPAF recently marked a significant milestone in its mission to uphold and align powered access training standards worldwide with a pilot senior instructor workshop held in Changsha, China on 12-13 May. This initiative brought together senior instructors from both Europe and Asia, reinforcing IPAF’s commitment to delivering consistent, high-quality training across all regions.

  • At the recent IPAF Platform Türkiye Konferansı, attendees were treated to a vibrant exhibition of artwork by the children of İstanbul Vinç employees. This special initiative, organised as part of İstanbul Vinç’s corporate social responsibility programme, brought imagination and engineering together in a unique and uplifting way.

  • One of the key conditions for MEWP stability is the ability of the ground or structure to safely support the weight of the MEWP at its point of contact with the ground in all configurations. Failure to consider the load-bearing capacity of the ground could potentially cause the MEWP to go out of level, become unstable, and overturn.

  • Technical Guidance

    Fall Protection in MEWPs (H1)

    When working from a boom type mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), it is strongly recommended that a lanyard short enough for the wearer to be restrained within the platform be used. The lanyard may contain an energy absorbing device, provided it is short enough to restrain the wearer within the platform. This includes static booms (1B) and mobile booms (3B).

  • Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) are specifically designed to lift people to a position where they can work at height safely within the platform. MEWPs are not designed to transfer people from one level to another, or for people to exit the platform at height.

  • This notice is valid as of 12 June 2025. It is reviewed periodically and at least annually to ensure compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation and legislative requirements defined by law, where appropriate. It is applicable for the following users:

  • Familiarisation is required prior to operating any MEWP that is significantly different in weight, height, length or complexity to the MEWP on which training took place. The operator, supervisor, nominated ground rescue personnel, service engineer/ technician and demonstrator all need adequate familiarisation of the MEWP prior to undertaking their duties.

  • Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) Category 3a (e.g., scissor lifts) are sometimes fitted with extension decks, these can be single, or double deck extensions. The purpose of an extension deck is to provide additional horizontal outreach beyond the main deck of the platform.
