• Do you have a rescue plan? Always have a rescue plan in place for mast climbing work platforms (MCWPs) and construction hoists.

  • Don't fall for it! Position your MEWP correctly and always stay inside the platform guardrails with both feet on the platform floor.

  • Are you servicing the MEWP safely when on-site? Servicing MEWPs on-site can create higher risks than workshop servicing.

  • Use a Spotter. In situations with restricted visibility, use a banksman/spotter to guide you into position.

  • Be safe in the workshop. Ensure all work on MEWPs is carried out safely.

  • Keep all occupants safe. Be aware of all platform occupants when moving the MEWP.

    Andy Access A22
  • Is the Nominated Ground Rescue Person familiarised? Not all MEWPs are the same. Make sure you understand, learn and practice the ground controls and emergency lowering procedure.

  • Do not use a damaged harness, lanyard or connector. Always conduct a pre-use check before using your personal fall protection equipment (PFPE).

  • Always check ground loading and use the IPAF spreader pad calculator.

Andy Access: Use Spreader Pads for your MEWP. Always check ground loading and use the IPAF calculator at www.ipaf.org/pads
  • Be street smart! Manage vehicle and pedestrian traffic, create a safe working zone.

  • Working at height is a high-risk activity, take care of your people and be responsible for safety with IPAF's help. IPAF has a range of Andy Access posters, in multiple languages, to help your workforce, covering important mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) and mast climbing work platform (MCWP) safety topics. All to help keep operators safe and prevent accidents.

Andy Access: Safety Starts From The Top
  • Do not jump out of the platform. Always enter and exit the platform using three points of contact.

    Andy Access A14
  • Danger keep well clear. When using pedestrian controls stand clear of the MEWP and return back to the platform when safe.

    Andy Access A15
  • Caution with guardrails. Be careful not to trap your fingers when lowering or raising guardrails.

    Andy Access A16
  • Correct MEWP selection. Always use the right MEWP for the job.

    Andy Access A18
  • Don't overload the Platform. Always respect the load chart and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for its intended use.

    Andy Access AM1
  • Do not interfere with ties. A mast climbing work platform (MCWP) needs all of the ties for stability.

    Andy Access AM2
  • Don't use a MEWP as a crane! Lifting objects can overload or damage the MEWP and cause it to overturn.

    Andy Access A9
  • Prevent unauthorised use. After use, always leave the MEWP in a safe and secure place and remove the key.

    Andy Access A10
  • Keep clear of cables. You do not need to touch the power cables to be electrocuted – electricity can jump!

    Andy Access A11
  • Register pre-owned MEWPs. Make sure you register with the MEWP manufacturer to get safety alerts and product updates.

  • Setting up on a slope? Outriggers and spreader pads must be on level and stable ground.
