In 2023 the International Powered Access Federation, IPAF is celebrating 40 years since its formation back in 1983 from the merger of two associations; International Federation of Hydraulic Platform Manufacturers (IFHPM) and International Work Platform Association (IWPA).

MEWPs are a safe way of providing temporary access at height for tree care work and vegetation control. This is necessary in both urban and rural locations – often in public areas close to pedestrians and passing traffic.

Data from IPAF’s Accident Reporting project shows falls from the platform are one of the leading causes of fatal incidents involving powered access equipment. Of the latest 117 incidents reported, falls from the platform resulted in 120 being people injured and 93 killed. Proper planning and ensuring a safe system of work are essential parts in the process to avoid falls from the platform.

IPAF’s Women in Powered Access Initiative aims to recognize and celebrate the contributions of women in powered access, as well as outlining career pathways for women both already in the industry and those looking to enter it.

Entrapments are situations in which the operator or occupant of a MEWP becomes trapped between the MEWP controls or platform guardrails and an immovable object or external structure. If an operator becomes trapped, it often prevents them lowering or moving the MEWP safely away, leading to crushing injuries to all persons trapped. Operators will often be unable to rectify the situation and might find operating the controls makes the situation worse.
