  • Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) are a safe way of providing temporary access at height for tree care work and vegetation control. Overgrown or overhanging trees and vegetation require management and MEWPs provide an ideal solution for this. This task is necessary in both urban and rural locations – often in public areas close to pedestrians and passing traffic. Pruning or removing branches can be a hazardous task, especially if trees are in the proximity of power lines or communications cables or the platform is poorly positioned in relation to the work area.

  • Representatives of IPAF at the Association of Professional Foresters (APF) Show in Warwickshire, 22-24 September 2022, have launched an updated leaflet entitled Safe Use of MEWPs to Manage Trees and Vegetation.

  • Don't fall for it! Position your MEWP correctly and always stay inside the platform guardrails with both feet on the platform floor.

IPAF Webinar: Selecting the Correct MEWP

This webinar (broadcast on 24 March 2021) looks at the importance of selecting the correct MEWP for the job to enable work to be carried out safely and effectively. Presenters: Brian Parker, Head of Safety & Technical (IPAF), Mark Keily, QHSE Director (Sunbelt Rentals Limited) and Paul Roddis, Training Manager (IPAF).

  • A new course aimed at demonstrating how to perform a site assessment and select the correct mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) to carry out the job has been launched by IPAF, which can be completed at a Training Centre or remotely via eLearning.

  • Do not use a damaged harness, lanyard or connector. Always conduct a pre-use check before using your personal fall protection equipment (PFPE).

  • The first wave of apprentices on a new route to certifying specialist MEWP technicians have been celebrated by representatives of IPAF as they embarked on their studies at North Warwickshire & South Leicestershire College.

  • When working at height in a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP), one of the leading causes of death and severe injury is falls from the platform. This toolbox talk looks at the risks and how to prevent falling from the platform.

  • Harnesses and lanyards prevent severe injury or death by preventing falls from MEWPs, therefore it is essential that you check the condition and function before every use. Through use, PFPE could become damaged, worn or lose parts. These checks must be repeated before every use.

  • A series of virtual workshops to assist and support those who regularly carry out third-party inspections of MEWPs and MCWPs will be hosted by IPAF to meet demand, which is high across the Middle East and South Asia.

  • IPAF Members and partners are invited to register now to join the free online Access, Lift & Handlers (ALH) Conference, which will be hosted on Friday 23 October, and featuring presentations from Peter Douglas, CEO, and Norty Turner, IPAF President.

  • The use of simulators as part of the assessment process of advanced operator training courses has been approved by the IPAF Council. Training centres delivering IPAF’s PAL+ advanced operator course can now assess candidates in a VR environment.

  • The IPAF Summit & IAPAs scheduled to be held in London, UK, on 18 March 2021, is to go ahead as a digital event, with delegates joining online from around the work, to allow maximum certainty for those planning to attend during the coronavirus pandemic.

  • The number of Powered Access Licence (PAL) Cards issued by IPAF to MEWP and MCWP operators worldwide has now surpassed 2 million, with 800,000 valid cards currently in use on worksites around the globe.

  • IPAF Members are being offered financial assistance to help them during the ongoing pandemic. IPAF is providing a 25% discount on the 2020 membership fee against the cost of 2021 fees and is bringing forward its annual rebate for Training Centres.

  • The positive state of MEWP rental and underlying economic trends in Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and China should shape strong recoveries after the coronavirus pandemic, according to the latest powered access rental market reports from IPAF.
