Snagged platform

IPAF MEWP Operator

If a boom-type MEWP becomes snagged or caught on another object, you might not realise this has happened, and might experience a catapult effect if you do not follow correct procedures with caution. If you operate the controls to try to free the platform, you might store up energy or inertia, and if the boom suddenly springs free, this could propel the platform quickly in a catapult or whiplash effect. Occupants are at risk of ejection and injury from the platform by catapult action.

Occupants must always wear the correct harness and lanyard connected to the appropriate anchor-point in boom-type platforms. If you are aware of the platform being caught or snagged, halt operations immediately and assess how best to disengage without leading to catapulting. If needs be, alert your ground personnel for advice or assistance.

NB, the catapult effect may also occur when travelling over uneven terrain or being struck by another vehicle or piece of plant machinery.
