Be Street Smart – How to Stay Safe When Operating MEWPs Near Roadways

News story header website Stay Safe on or Near Roadways

Working alongside roadways is high-risk, especially without adequate planning and traffic management. It is essential that the MEWP and personnel are positioned safely and not in the path of traffic. If MEWPs are incorrectly positioned, there is a risk of them being hit by passing vehicles or machinery. Accidents where a vehicle collides with an elevated MEWP can be catastrophic.

Stay safe by following these key principles:

  • Plan ahead – Before starting work, ensure there is a documented traffic management scheme in place, which includes setting up the MEWP. Always check the positioning of the MEWP and the ground conditions.
  • Be visible – The visibility of personnel on or near roads is essential when operating or during set-up. Wear hi-vis PPE when operating. Ensure flashing beacons fitted to the MEWP are operational. Ensure the work area is well lit if working in the hours of darkness.
  • Use effective traffic management – Ensure any signs and cones are visible and in good condition for maximum warning to oncoming vehicles/traffic.
  • Implement an exclusion zone – Ensure there is an adequate exclusion zone in place. Position the MEWP so that it does not overhang into traffic, including configurations when slewed and when elevated. Take into account the height and size of trucks and buses that may pass closely by. Restrict access to pedestrians so that they cannot walk under the platform.
  • Be vigilant, don’t be complacent – Always be aware of what is going on around you. If you think a situation is unsafe, stop work immediately, lower the platform and report the issue to your supervisor.
  • Have a rescue plan – Ensure there is a documented recovery and rescue plan in place, and it is understood by everyone involved.
