Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) are a safe way of providing temporary access at height for tree care work and vegetation control. Overgrown or overhanging trees and vegetation require management and MEWPs provide an ideal solution for this. This task is necessary in both urban and rural locations – often in public areas close to pedestrians and passing traffic. Pruning or removing branches can be a hazardous task, especially if trees are in the proximity of power lines or communications cables or the platform is poorly positioned in relation to the work area.
Representatives of IPAF at the Association of Professional Foresters (APF) Show in Warwickshire, 22-24 September 2022, have launched an updated leaflet entitled Safe Use of MEWPs to Manage Trees and Vegetation.
Entries are now open for the 2023 International Awards for Powered Access (IAPAs), which will be hosted alongside the IPAF Summit on 20 April 2023 in Berlin, Germany.
Visitors to IPAF’s stand at bauma will be invited to take a safety quiz testing their knowledge of how to prevent falls from the platform in line with IPAF’s Don’t Fall for It! safety campaign.
The IPAF Asia Conference & Showcase event made a successful return on 28-29 July at the Singapore EXPO & Hilton Orchard Singapore – with more than 250 physical attendees joining the first in-person edition of the event since the pandemic.
Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs), are a safe and effective means of access for undertaking temporary work at height tasks. It is important to remember a MEWP is only as safe as the person who is operating it. If this equipment is used incorrectly, unsafely or by inexperienced people, accidents and fatalities are more likely to happen.
This Toolbox Talk provides some safety measures which can reduce the risk of falls from the platform.

Stability is defined as “a condition in which the sum of the moments which tend to overturn the MEWP is less than the sum of the moments tending to resist overturning’. All MEWPs are designed to meet defined stability criteria and testing requirements that are critical to the safe use and operation. MEWP operator training curriculum must include the knowledge to understand factors affecting stability. MEWP stability is further ensured through management site risk assessment and proper selection of MEWP for the site conditions. This webinar will address the design, safe-use and training that are essential to ensuring MEWPs are stable and tip-overs prevented.
