It is with great regret that we announce the passing of John Barker, a pioneering figure in the powered access industry and the first President of the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF). John passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 7th, 2024, at the age of 88, after a battle with late-stage prostate cancer.
Some media reports have referred to this incident as scaffolding. Based on current information, the equipment involved appears to be a mast climbing work platform – a powered access system with distinct design, standards and safe-use requirements. Accurate identification is essential to ensure proper understanding of risks and appropriate industry response.

A dedicated breakfast event aimed at providing a networking space for women working across powered access will be hosted by IPAF during APEX 2026, as part of IPAF’s ongoing Women in Powered Access (WiPA) initiative. The special breakfast event will be hosted on 3 June between 08:30 - 09.30 in the Bar Bistro Saam restaurant at the MECC, where APEX 2026 will be held. At this informal networking breakfast, we’ll have speakers communicating the support they’ve had in their careers within the powered access industry.
