IPAF to Deliver Live Rescue & Recovery Demonstrations at SHW Live Manchester 2026
IPAF will be exhibiting at Safety, Health & Wellbeing (SHW) Live in Manchester from 10-11 February 2026, where Brian Parker, Head of Safety & Technical at IPAF, will be delivering two live rescue and recovery demonstrations each day.
The demonstrations are designed to reflect real-world incidents and will focus on the importance of planning, training, and effective communication when things go wrong at height.
Demonstration 1: Planning for Operator Entrapment Rescue
The first demonstration will focus on how to rescue an operator trapped between boom platform controls and an overhead obstruction. Using a boom lift raised to height, a mannequin will simulate entrapment, with the chest pressed against the guardrails and the head and shoulders in contact with an overhead obstruction.
The scenario demonstrates:
- The use of ground controls to recover the operator
- Application of emergency response procedures
- The critical role of pre-planning, training and clear communication
- How quick, informed action can prevent serious injury or fatality
Demonstration 2: Planning for Recovery When Ground Controls Are Inaccessible
The second demonstration focuses on a more complex scenario where ground or auxiliary controls are inaccessible due to obstruction or a blocked access route. In this case, the rescue is carried out using an alternative MEWP, employing a platform-to-platform recovery method.
This demonstration highlights:
- The importance of pre-planned recovery routes
- Understanding chassis layout and control locations
- Coordinated response roles, including a supervisor, stranded operator, trained boom operator, and rescue personnel
- Correct use of PPE, harnesses, and additional fall protection where required
- Establishing and maintaining an exclusion zone during rescue operations
Both demonstrations reinforce the need for employers and operators to be prepared for rescue and recovery incidents, not just normal operation.
Attendees are encouraged to attend the live demonstrations and speak with IPAF representatives on stand D4 to learn more about MEWP safety and training, and access dedicated guidance.
