Electrocution and electric shocks
If you operate a MEWP too close to a power line, or touch a power line, there is a risk of electrocution or electric shock.

MEWPs should not be operated in the vicinity of overhead power lines because of the risk of electrocution or electric shock.
A MEWP operator should always check for overhead and underground hazards before operating. Power lines can often be hidden by trees or vegetation, so MEWP operators should always be continually aware of their surroundings.
- Look up before you lift. Assess the area above you, look for the presence of power lines or electrical infrastructure. If there are electrical hazards, do not elevate the platform and report the issue to your supervisor.
- Look around before you move. Before you drive or lift, look first. Site conditions can change quickly, and accidents can happen without warning. Stay alert and don’t be complacent, that’s when accidents happen.
- Look down before you lower. Always check below you for electrical hazards such as power lines or electrical infrastructure before you lower or rotate the platform.
A MEWP operator should always be a safe distance away from overhead power lines. IPAF recommends:
- 30 feet (9 meters) + a fully extended boom on distribution lines
- 50 feet (15 meters) + a fully extended boom on transmission lines
If a MEWP has contacted a power line, the operator should try and lower the platform to a place of safety. If this is not possible, the operator should:
Never touch a MEWP at the base of the machine if the platform is in contact with a power line as the MEWP may be live - remember, electrical power cannot be seen. You should call the emergency services and wait until the power is isolated before lowering the platform.
Never touch a person who is having an electric shock as you too could also receive a shock.
