Safe Loading and Unloading

Have you planned for the safe delivery of your MEWPs? The loading and unloading of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) is a potentially risky activity, as findings from the IPAF accident reporting database show. About a third of the accidents recorded by rental companies involve MEWP delivery drivers.

Guidance and resources

No Banners on Scissor Lifts

Many scissor lifts are specifically designed for indoor use only with zero wind, they are not designed to hold banners. Attaching banners to a scissor lift will increase the surface area and create a "sail board” effect which will destabilize or potentially turn over a MEWP.

Avoiding Electrocutions: Stay ALive at Height

Stay safe when near to power lines/conductors with MEWPs. Electrocutions can be prevented through proper planning, risk assessment and management of work at height, including thorough operator training and familiarisation.

Avoiding Trapping/Crushing: Secondary Guarding

The Best Practice Guidance for mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) was released in July 2010 by the UK-based Strategic Forum for Construction Plant Safety Group with the aim of avoiding trapping or crushing incidents when these machines are used in confined overhead spaces.

Guidance and resources

Spread the Load!

IPAF is calling for the proper assessment of ground conditions and the correct use of stabilisers, outriggers and spreader plates.

Moving tracked spider-type platforms

Posters are available that illustrate key safety points to observe when moving and using tracked spider-type platforms, also known as atrium lifts. These machines tend to be narrow and could become unstable if proper attention is not given to the extension or retraction of the outriggers when travelling.
