Students discover career opportunities in powered access

2009/05/15

Young people got a chance to discover the powered access industry as a career opportunity at the IPAF stand during the recent Intermat show in Paris.

The Job Access project welcomed 18-year-olds from technical high schools in France and Italy, who had previously registered online at www.ipaf.org/jobaccess and completed a questionnaire.

These young students attended a 50-minute lecture at the IPAF stand during Intermat. They were given an insight to the powered access industry—history, development of equipment, use of equipment, main employers in the industry (manufacturers, rental companies), main areas of employment (hydraulics, electronics, engineering, hire desk, etc.), safe operation and training.

The students took a short test at the end of the lecture. The most successful participant of each group was awarded a laptop as a prize.

An initiation into the world of powered access would not be complete without some practical experience of operating a platform. The students also had the opportunity to test the equipment, accompanied by qualified instructors.

They were also treated to a demonstration featuring a real-weight dummy on a specially modified Skyjack boom. This demonstration was a vivid illustration of the dangers of not wearing a full-body harness when operating a boom-type platform.

Job Access at Intermat was a significant start,” said IPAF managing director Tim Whiteman. “It was well-received by the students and teachers who attended. IPAF is planning to run Job Access in other countries, among them, at SAIE this October in Bologna, Italy.”

IPAF thanks the project sponsors: Genie, Haulotte, JLG and Manitou. The Job Access programme will be made available in a variety of languages.
